Why Runners Get Hip Pain

Hip pain can come from several structures:

  • Hip flexor overuse

  • Glute weakness

  • Tendon irritation

  • Poor control during single-leg tasks

Common Patterns

  • Pain at the front = hip flexor, joint capsule or tendon overload

  • Pain on the side = glute med irritation

  • Pain deep in the hip = joint irritation

  • Inner hip = groin tendon or hernia

What Helps?

  • Strengthen glutes (bridges, hip thrusts, side lying leg lifts)

  • Improve single-leg control (SL squats, banded hip work)

  • Reduce speed work and volume temporarily - allow symptoms to settle

  • Gentle mobility if stiff
